St. Moritz Art Masters 2013: News April 2013

From 28 August to 1 September 2013 the ST. MORITZ ART MASTERS will be staged for the 6th time in the Engadin. This year’s country focus will be on China.

For 10 days exhibitions at special sites are to be seen – in public spaces as well as in institutions and galleries – presenting oriental and occidental art. A distinct focus lies on present Chinese trends and developments. In cooperation with the Swiss art network Artalliance we will encounter young Chinese artists from the Sichuan region, such as Yang Mian and Wang Haichuan.

The photography exhibition of works by Liu Heung Shing, the Chinese winner of the Pulitzer Prize, documents the journalistic development of photography in China from the Cultural Revolution to the present day. It is juxtaposed with works by international stars of photography such as Patrick Demarchelier and Peter Lindbergh. In addition, works by the Chinese painter and sculptor Shao Fan and photographs by the artist Chen Fuli will be on show. The oeuvre of the latter takes a poetical look at the cultural heritage of his country. Talks and events introducing this country and its rich cultural diversity will accompany this year’s focus on China.

A great number of artistic contributions reflect internationality and local rootedness. The USA is represented by the legendary multi-media artist Robert Wilson and the painter Donald Baechler. The Belgian Biennale participant Jan Fabre, the sculptor Hubert Kiecol from Cologne, the Swiss artist Olaf Breuning and the French artist Sébastien de Ganay will all mark the public space with strong works. Visitors will encounter text sculptures, works of concrete, steel and bronze on their walks through St. Moritz, Zuoz and Sils. The so-called WALK OF ART will again link around 30 sites in and around St. Moritz this year.

A further highlight of this year’s festival will be the contribution of the German Biennale participant Tobias Rehberger, who will create the overall visual identity of the St. Moritz Art Masters 2013.

In 2013 the Engadin Art Talks / E.A.T. will take place for the fourth time within the framework of the St. Moritz Art Masters. This year national and international artists, architects and writers will discuss and philosophise about their works under the heading “GHOSTS AND THE UNCANNY”, referring to the mountain landscape of the Engadin. The high-calibre symposium will be headed by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director of the Serpentine Gallery, London, and Beatrix Ruf, Director of the Kunsthalle Zurich. Foundation Director is the Zurich publisher Cristina Bechtler. The complete list of artists will be available from mid-May 2013.
