This small museum housed in the Chesa Fonio in the heart of the village (beside the village hall) displays works by the Sils painter Andrea Robbi in conjunction with contemporary art. New exhibitions are staged twice a year, curated by the Galerie Stephan Witschi in Zürich. Andrea Robbi (1864 -1945) was born into a family of Engadin confectioners, and grew up in Tuscany and Piedmont; the family spent every summer in the Engadin. Andrea studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich together with Giovanni Giacometti. Later periods of study followed in Milan, Rome, Paris and Dresden. In 1898 he returned to Sils, and withdrew to the family house on the Postplatz where he led an isolated life. Robbi died, impoverished and alone, in 1945. The people of Sils had long forgotten that the failed artist had once been a talented young painter. Only in 1988 was his talent rediscovered and the high quality of his paintings recognised. As a result, this small museum in the centre of the village of Sils Maria was established.
